MLS Power Rankings: Week 9

The Galaxy return to the top spot in the rankings after a week that saw pick up four points that could have easily been six if not for a late giveaway in Philadelphia.  The biggest risers of this week are FC Dallas, who picked up two wins, and Chivas USA, who upset the Red Bulls in New York.  Both Sporting KC and Columbus slid three spots after losing their games by three last week


 1. Los Angeles Galaxy (3)
Record:  5W-2L-5D
Last Week: 1-1 Draw at Philadelphia Union, 4-1 Win vs Sporting Kansas City
Next Week:  May 21 at Chivas USA
If not for one giveaway the Galaxy could have collected a full six points this week.

2. Real Salt Lake (2)
Record: 5W-1L-1D
Last Week:  0-0 Draw vs Houston Dynamo
Next Week:  May 22 at FC Dallas
RSL seems to be still hung over from the Champions League Loss.

3. New York Red Bulls (1)
Record:  4W-2L-3D
Last Week:  3-2 Loss vs Chivas USA
Next Week:  May 21 at Houston Dynamo
A very disappointing loss by one of the glamour teams in the MLS

4. FC Dallas (7)
Record:  5W-3L-2D
Last Week:  1-0 Win vs Toronto FC, 1-0 Win vs Philadelphia Union
Next Week:  May 22 vs Real Salt Lake
FC Dallas continue another week with two wins at home without their MVP.

5. Seattle Sounders (6)
Record:  3W-3L-5D
Last Week:  1-1 Draw vs Portland Timbers
Next Week:  May 21 vs Sporting Kansas City
Sounders draw with their PNW rivals but still move up due to losses by other top 5 teams.

6. Philadelphia Union (5)
Record: 4W-3L-2D
Last Week:  1-1 Draw vs Los Angeles Galaxy, 1-0 Loss at FC Dallas
Next Week:  May 21 vs Chicago Fire
Union continue to struggle to score as they were lucky to draw LA at home before losing to FCD.

7. Columbus Crew (4)
Record:  3W-2L-4D
Last Week: 3-0 Loss at San Jose Earthquakes
Next Week:  May 21 at Portland Timbers
Disappointing road loss to San Jose drops the Crew out of the top five.

8. Colorado Rapids (8)
Record:  4W-3L-3D
Last Week:  1-1 Draw at DC United
Next Week:  May 22 vs Toronto FC
Rapids get a draw in DC as they continue to rebound after missing some key players.

9. Chivas USA (12)
Record:  3W-3L-3D
Last Week:  3-2 Win at New York Red Bulls
Next Week:  May 21 vs Los Angeles Galaxy
The Goats are racking up an impressive resume especially away from home.

10. Portland Timbers (9)
Record:  4W-3L-2D
Last Week:  1-1 Draw at Seattle Sounders
Next Week:  May 21 vs Columbus Crew
Portland draws their I95 rivals but lose ground due to other teams more impressive.

11. Houston Dynamo (10)
Record:  3W-3L-4D
Last Week:  0-0 Draw at Real Salt Lake
Next Week:  May 21 vs New York Red Bulls
Like the Timbers, Houston collect an impressive road draw but are unable to hold ground.

12. DC United (11)
Record:  3W-4L-3D
Last Week: 1 -1 Draw vs Colorado Rapids
Next Week:  No Match
DC United get a week off after drawing the defending MLS Cup Champions.

13. New England Revolution (13)
Record:  3W-3L-4D
Last Week:  1-0 Win vs Vancouver Whitecaps
Next Week:  May 21 at San Jose Earthquakes
An ugly win by the Revolution doesn’t help them move up in the rankings.

14. San Jose Earthquakes (16)
Record:  2W-4L-3D
Last Week:  1-1 Draw at Vancouver Whitecaps, 3-0 Win vs Columbus Crew
Next Week:  May 21 vs New England Revolution
SJ lose 2 points late in Vancouver but come back with a solid win versus the Crew.

15. Toronto FC (15)
Record:  2W-4L-5D
Last Week: 1-0 Loss at FC Dallas, 2-2 Draw vs Chicago Fire
Next Week:  May 22 at Colorado Rapids
Conterversial penalty cost TFC in but only have themselves to blame in draw with the Fire.

16. Chicago Fire (18)
Record:  1W-3L-5D
Last Week:  2-2 Draw at Toronto FC
Next Week:  May 21 at Philadelphia Union
Chicago comes back on the road from 2 goals down to salvage a point.

17. Sporting Kansas City (14)
Record: 1W-5L-1D
Last Week:  4-1 Loss at Los Angeles Galaxy
Next Week:  May 21 at Seattle Sounders
Understandable that 10 games on road are tough but matches still need to be closer.

18. Vancouver Whitecaps (17)
Record:  1W-4L-4D
Last Week:  1-1 Draw vs San Jose Earthquakes, 1-0 Loss at New England Revolution
Next Week:  No Match
The Whitecaps put all efforts towards Canadian title as they get a week off from league play.
